Soapbox Saturday: The Yes Men

Wow! Talk about telling the truth where it really matters.  The Yes Men aren’t really pranksters so much as whistleblowers.  Dressing up as VIPs and crashing press conferences and meetings, they actually tell the truth about starving children, toxic waste and the general rape of planet Earth, nature and humanity by the insatiable devouring of everything in sight to maximize profits for shareholders as required by law.   Who are the sick and crazy ones?  The Yes Men are certainly worth a look here I think.

The Yes Men are known for impersonating big-time criminals in order to publicly humiliate them, and otherwise giving journalists excuses to cover important issues. These days, we’re focusing all our energy on the Yes Lab, which helps activists use creative techniques to promote change. One example of their devilish expression of the truth is in this story

On the night of Dec. 2nd and 3rd, 1984, a Union Carbide plant (now Dow Chemical) in Bhopal, India, began leaking 27 tons of the deadly gas methyl isocyanate. 5,000 residents were killed and more injured.

After the accident, victims’ families were compensated with US $300-500 per victim.Twenty years later, BBC World Television wants a Dow representative to discuss the company’s position. They find a website called and arrange an interview. Days later: Dow’s spokesperson appears live on the BBC World Service to discuss the Bhopal Disaster.

He is ecstatic to make the announcement: Dow will accept full responsibility for the Bhopal disaster, and has a $12 billion dollar plan to compensate the victims and remediate the site.

But the whole think was just a Yes Men prank.  Read the fascinating story here.  What a lark!  And if you like that prank don’t wait to see more in this video the government tried to squelch! OMG ROFLMAO
