City Theatre’s groundbreaking CityWrights Professional Weekend for Playwrights, will take place from June 25 – 28, 2015 at the EPIC Hotel in Miami. This convocation of playwrights continues to grow as a nationally recognized event that puts South Florida center stage as a cultural destination for theatre professionals. Highlighted by the annual Summer Shorts Festival, CityWrights is a lively and comprehensive symposium dedicated to the art, business, development, training, inspiration and mentorship of dramatists and the development of new work.
In its fifth year, CityWrights 2015 will focus on the topic of gender parity in the theatre industry and explore the imbalance of voices that are being heard on stage. A prestigious ensemble of award-winning master artists, leading organizations and institutions, agents, publishers, producers and artistic directors will discuss the studies and statistics, and the strategies and tactics necessary to include, explore, produce and celebrate the work of women playwrights.
Celebrating its 20th anniversary season, City Theatre is Florida’s only theatre company that offers programming like CityWrights, which provides playwrights, teachers, students and audiences a weekend intensive of artistic workshops, career and professional development, and education for local, regional and national playwrights, students, educators, and audiences, who craft, create and appreciate original new work. Playwrights coming from outside of Florida to CityWrights enjoy an exciting conference that takes place in Miami, one of the most dynamic cities in the country.
Attendees of this year’s CityWrights Professional Weekend for Playwrights will leave the conference a published playwright thanks to a brand new collaboration with CreateSpace, an innovative online company that is committed to the art of self-publishing. Keeping up with the changing tides and utilizing the technological resources available, City Theatre will use CityWrights to create, write, edit, and publish the first ever City Theatre Anthology of New Plays. Participants will challenge their abilities to create new work over the short span of the conference. These short plays will be published alongside Summer Shorts plays to highlight the intricate and creative works that are dear to the nature and mission of City Theatre.
